30 Dec 10 Nuggets of Info: Denver Heating Up, George Karl To Miss Playoffs' First Round

The Denver Nuggets sat firmly in the second seed in the West for most of this season, but all the magical momentum they had built up over the first 70 games was completely destroyed during their debacle of a road trip.Trouble began with a loss to the Bucks in the Pepsi Center, and it continued with consecutive losses to the Knicks and Celtics.Only a buzzer beater by Carmelo Anthony could steal the Nuggets a win against the Raptors, and Denver lost back-to-back games against the elite Magic and Mavericks to end the nightmarish roadie 1-4.Overall, Denver lost a dreadful five of seven games by an average of 9.2 points, as their defense was far too soft. The Nuggets defense has lost its personality.Once a physical and scrappy bunch, this squad looks lost and careless without Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
Kenyon Martin. Plus, interim head coach Adrian Dantley has been too passive on the sidelines and needs to reign in erratic play more aggressively. Finally, being back in the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center has benefited the team and the Nuggets have been able to put together strong efforts in their last two games to break a trend of lackluster efforts.Thursday night versus the Trailblazers was arguably the biggest win of the season for Denver. The Nuggets came out with a purpose in that game, led by Anthony, and wouldn allow this meaningful game slip away. Melo scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the deciding fourth quarter, as he fought through an off-shooting night to play well in crunch time. Then it seemed as if Denver forgot all the good things they did the night before when they started horribly against the visiting Clippers. The Nuggets came out with no intensity and found themselves down by nine points after the first quarter, and were down by as much as 19 at one point in the first half. The boys in blue were able to shorten that lead to eight by half, and took over the game in the third quarter, usually Denver worst this season.Backup turned starter Johan Petro had a breakout performance in the third, scoring 12 points and grabbing four rebounds as well. Petro was extremely active and helped the Nuggets to a win while big man Chris Andersen nursed his recently injured sprained ankle.Sure, neither win was pretty, but for a team challenged by injuries and illness, both wins showed the Nuggets have heart. They are fighting, scrapping, and producing in any way possible. Denver depth is becoming more evident, and everyone is doing their part.Nene contributions have grown, with 15 points and six rebounds averaged in the Nuggets last two wins, and Andersen played well (5 pts, 6 reb, 4 BS) before rolling his ankle versus Portland.Starting two-guard Arron Afflalo grabbed a team-high nine rebounds against LAC and Ty Lawson provided some spark with eight points and four assists. If the Nuggets want to keep this winning streak alive and move back into homecourt positioning for the playoffs, they will have to keep scrapping and continue fighting as if the playoffs have already begun. And with those two wins, and losses by the Jazz, Suns, and Mavericks Saturday, the Nuggets (50-27) are currently in a four-way tie with those teams for the second-best record in the West.Only five games remain for the Denver, and all are important, Arizona Cardinals jersey
including the season-ender in Phoenix that will almost certainly decide postseason seedings in the wild Western Conference.George Karl to miss the first round of playoff basketballJust as the Nuggets got back into winning ways, more bad news about their sick head coach was reported Sunday. In an interview with the Denver Post , Karl life partner Kim Van Deraa said that the coach will not return for the regular season and will probably not be there to run the Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs that start April 17.To count out all the playoffs, that up to his body, Van Deraa said. Who knows when his return will be? No one knows. He doesn even know. Im sure he hoping that if we go on a playoff run, that he can (coach) this season. On March 21, Karl was admitted to the hospital after feeling much pain in his legs, which were due to the blood clots doctors found and had to remove. He remained in the hospital for four days, and is now home resting.Even though Karl radiation treatments are over now, he still must feed himself through the feeding tube that was implanted into his stomach, and may have to for another six months. These are ominous signs that may mean Karl won be able to return to coaching until next season, but no one can argue that he should focus on his health instead of basketball right now.A heartfelt mailbag message to KarlIt been a while since anyone has sent in mailbag questions or comments, but this email to Karl is inspirational and I had to pass it on.From Michael Hayes of Meriden, CT,I just wanted to pass along my best to George Karl. I'm a 31 year old NBA fan who recently went through head and neck radiation/chemo myself for tongue cancer. George is incredibly brave togo throughthe treatments in the public eye.Midway through my treatments (June-Aug '08) the Celtics won the NBA championship. I cried tears of joy the night they beat the Lakers to win the franchise's 17th championship. I'll never forget the incredible feeling of joy the team gave me, during what was a difficult time. I hope the Nuggets can provide Coach Karlwith similar joy.To George, all the best...you're an inspiration.Inspirational indeed.George, thank you for writing in and telling us your personal story. It enlightening to hear how sports can be beneficial to someone struggling through a life-threatening illness.Hopefully the Nuggets can keep winning for Karl, and his health continues to steadily improve. What do you want to read about? But Lawson has already proved that he can play in the NBA

So whoever Kahn drafts will inevitably be compared to Lawson.Kahn also signed Ramon Sessions away from the Bucks for four years and $16 million and Sessions's averages are down more than four points and nearly three assists per game compared to last season. Chances are the Wolves are stuck with Sessions until it either expires or has just one year remaining.Kahn's future might be tied to whether or not Rubio ever makes it to Minnesota. It's hard to believe that Rubio is in a rush to leave European powerhouse FC Barcelona to join one of the league's worst teams. Especially when he knows that he can avoid the league's rookie scale by coming over three years after being drafted as opposed to just one or two.Kahn might still insist that he was happy with the pick but if he has the chance to move Rubio's rights he shouldn't allow his pride to stand in the way of making a deal that could pay off immediately. Those Who Are Trying To Win Championships Now (From Worst to Best)6) R.C. Buford, San Antonio SpursBuford convinced Spurs owner Peter Holt to abandon any hope of having cap space this summer or next and instead make the trade for Richard Jefferson. The move has backfired and now the small-market Spurs are on the hook for one more year of Jefferson's deal at $15 million.Last week Buford signed Manu Ginobili to a three-year, $40 million extension.Even though I'm sure the Spurs and their fans are thrilled to have Ginobili locked up, had Buford not traded for Jefferson then he could have at least explored the free agent market this summer and then renounced Ginobili if he was able to attract a top-tier free agent to replace him.The Ginobili signing was more of an indication that the Jefferson trade was a failure than it was a reward for one of the franchise's greatest players ever. While draft picks Seattle Seahawks jersey
George Hill and DaJuan Blair have worked out, Buford's other big free agent signing, Antonio McDyess, hasn't really panned out either.Buford had $54 million committed to just six players before re-signing Ginobili and is a year away from having to re-sign Tony Parker.Buford is still one of the league's best GMs but he will have to get creative if he wants to give Tim Duncan another shot at a title. There were already rumors that Buford tried to trade Parker to the New Orleans Hornets for Chris Paul.Don't be surprised to hear more rumors regarding Parker this summer. With Hill still on a rookie contract and Jefferson almost impossible to trade, moving Parker might be Buford's only hope at winning Duncan another ring. He can't really afford to wait for Jefferson's deal to expire in the summer of 2011 when Duncan will be 35.The good news for Spurs fans is that nobody would be surprised if Buford found a way to trade Jefferson for the type of power forward that would allow Duncan to move into the same type of role that David Robinson took on when Duncan was drafted in 1997.5) Danny Ainge, Boston CelticsAinge has quite an eventful summer ahead of him. If the Celtics don't make it back to the Finals there will be plenty of questions for this team. For example, now that Kobe Bryant has established the market for stars in their early 30s, will Paul Pierce try to sign a similar extension with the Celtics? If Bryant is worth three years and $85 and Ginobili is worth three years and $40 million then surely Pierce is worth three years and at least $60 million, right? If that's the case then does that mean that Ray Allen is all but assured of being let go?It's curious that Ainge didn't try to move Allen when he had the chance. With Rajon Rondo's extension kicking in next season and a looming extension in 2011 for Kendrick Perkins, Ainge might have lost his only chance to keep this team a contender for at least another year. While Ainge acquired Nate Robinson from the Knicks to shore up the team's bench, the move seemed to be more of a play for Allen leaving than for this season's title hopes.By acquiring Robinson's Bird Rights Ainge has found a replacement for Allen's scoring for a fraction of the price it would take to retain Allen.4) Mitch Kupchak, Los Angeles LakersSpeaking of GMs that didn't make trades when they had the chance, Mitch Kupchak didn't acquire a point guard at the trade deadline and now the Lakers are no longer the favorites to win the title. Many pundits have even wondered if this team can make it out of the Western Conference for a third straight year.Kupchak could have tried to use Adam Morrison's expiring contract to find the team help and instead will now have to use their mid-level exemption to find a third-tier free agent point guard like the Clippers' Steve Blake or the Pacers' Earl Watson since Memphis owns their first-round pick from the Pau Gasol trade.Shannon Brown is all but assured of opting out of St. Louis Rams jersey
his deal, Derek Fisher is an unrestricted free agent who has given Lakers fans migraines this season, and Jordan Farmar is a restricted free agent who is much-better suited in an up-tempo offense than in the triangle. The good news is that if he's willing to let Farmar, Fisher, and Brown leave then he can use the full mid-level to sign a point guard without adding much, if anything, to this season's payroll.Kupchak should get credit for signing Bryant to a three-year extension when Bryant could have easily demanded a maximum five-year extension. By locking up Bryant and Gasol the Lakers have sent a message to this summer's free agent and their representatives that they have nobody under contract for the 2014 season. We'll get an idea if they were listening if you see guys like LeBron, Wade, and Bosh sign deals that give them the chance to opt out in the summer of 2014.3) Otis Smith, Orlando MagicSmith was criticized for trading away Hedo Turkoglu and replacing him in a separate deal with Vince Carter. While Carter has had flashes of brilliance it is another of Smith's moves that has paid dividends. Smith signed journeyman Matt Barnes to a two-year, $3 million contract that includes a player option for next season.Barnes has given the Magic a swagger and toughness that a lot of people felt they lacked in their series against the Lakers last June. While the Magic have struggled at times this season they still finished with the league's second-best record and you'd have to think that they have a better chance of knocking off the Cavs than the Lakers or Celtics do.2) Donnie Nelson, Dallas MavericksI know it's easy to be the GM of a team with an owner whose willing to spend whatever it takes to win a championship. I also know that there isn't a GM who wouldn't have made the deal that Nelson made with the Wizards for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and DeShawn Stevenson. But that's not why Nelson is so high on this list. What Nelson deserves credit for is the foresight he had when he signed Josh Howard and Drew Gooden that allowed him the flexibility to make the moves he made when the opportunity finally came about.Nelson only signed Gooden for one year after the Magic matched the team's offer for Marcin Gortat and made sure that the final season of Howard's contract was a team optionthus giving him two expiring contracts.Next summer Nelson has a team option with a buyout on Erick Dampier's contract that would allow him to swap him at his full value to a team looking to trim payroll who could then pay Dampier's buyout.1) Danny Ferry, Cleveland CavaliersEven if Ferry wasn't already bald you'd think he would have lost his hair just worrying about whether or not LeBron will re-sign with the team this summer. If the future number six does decide to bolt his home state you won't be able to put the blame on Ferry.Ferry has done everything in his power to put the best team around his superstar and as a result they have the league's best regular season record Tennessee Titans jersey
for the second year in a row and are the clear-cut favorites to the win the city its first title since 1964.Ferry hasn't been on the winning end of every trade he's made but he was able to take the free agent signees that many labeled disappointments and turn them into gold.Larry Hughes and Donyell Marshall were used to get Ben Wallace who was used to get Shaq.Damon Jones was used in the deal that brought the team Mo Williams. This season he used Zydrunas Ilgauskas to acquire Antawn Jamison without having to give up J.J. Hickson and got Ilgauskas to re-sign with the club after he was bought out by the Wizards.Ferry, with the blessing of Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, has committed an additional $150 million in payroll by acquiring Mo Williams, Shaquille O'Neal, Antawn Jamison, and re-signing Delonte West and Anderson Varejao. On the other hand, anything short of a championship would be considered a failure and could ultimately lead to the departure of the league's expected MVP.I don't envy the pressure that Ferry is under but I do admire the way that he's handled it.Those Trying To Win Championships With Economic Limits (From Worst to Best) 5) Jeff Bower, New Orleans HornetsI'm not an apologist for Bower but you have to feel for the guy. If it wasn't bad enough that his owner George Shinn instructed him to make a bunch of lopsided trades to trim payroll he also made him coach the team after he fired Byron Scott.Bower would never have made the trade that sent Tyson Chandler to the Bobcats for Emeka Okafor had it not saved Shinn money this season and next.

28 Dec 10 L.A. Lakers-Utah Jazz Recap: Three Things We Learned

Harry How/Getty ImagesMy favorite aspect of the NBA playoffs is how quickly the tides can change.Just four games ago, the Los Angeles Lakers were being called out by every radio host, talk show, newspaper, blog, and other sports mediumsincluding those in Los Angelesfor being old, slow, and not having what it takes to beat the young, upstart Oklahoma City Thunder. Suddenly, Kobe was past his prime and couldn't cut it anymore, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum weren't strong enough for playoff basketball, and Phil Jackson wasn't making proper adjustments. That was four games ago.Since then, the Los Angeles Lakers, led by Kobe Bryant, have reeled off four consecutive victories (two to close out the OKC series 4-2 and two to take a 2-0 lead over the Utah Jazz).Kobe Bryant hasSan Francisco 49ers jersey
scored 30 or more points in his last three games, playing a balanced and unselfish role while knowing when to go into attack mode. Every starter for the Lakers has played well. The bench has been as inconsistent as can be, but that is no different from the regular season. The point is, in a matter of 192 basketball minutes, the Lakers have shut up 90 percent of their doubters and brought a sense of calm and normalcy back to Los Angeles. While the Orlando Magic look like the best team of the remaining eight, it is important to keep in mind that they are playing great basketball from top to bottom. The Lakers haven't gotten consistency from their bench yet, so their ceiling seems to be a little higher. How it all shakes out remains to be seen, but 192 minutes can make all the difference.Three Things We Learned:1. The Utah Jazz Have No Chance to Win This SeriesThat's a harsh statementbut most truths and realities are harsh. There is no question that Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, and company are leaving it all on the floor. They Seattle Seahawks jersey
are scrapping and trying but they are simply outmatched. They have no answer for Gasol or Bynum, no answer for Kobe, and no consistent go-to guy on offense. In game two, the Jazz were - 58 to 40. The Lakers blocked 13 Utah shots to just four by the Jazz. The Lakers hit 51 percent of their field goals to the Jazz 39.6 percent. Despite having ten more turnovers and shooting less than 25 percent from three point range, the Lakers never had a doubt that they would win the ballgame.2. Kobe Bryant Is BackMaybe he never left, but we all assumed he did. But since the questioning of his talent and ability grew in volume, the games fiercest competitor did what he has always done; silenced the critics. The Jazz have no answer for Bryant. He is playing the most efficient basketball in a long time, possibly his career. Bryant has had no trouble getting his teammates involved while racking up assists, or taking over by scoring at will.Double teaming Bryant is not an option because the Jazz already have trouble with Gasol, Bynum, and Odom. Jerry Sloan is a heck of a coach, one of the game's best, but he simply does not have an answer and I don't blame him.3. The Lakers Get Bored EasilySimilar to game one, the Lakers had a double digit lead for most of the game, only to see it dwindle down in the fourth quarter.Complacency sets in with this ball club and they look as if they are bored out there at times. While that may be a testament to their talent and ability, it's a little worrisome when you consider the remaining teams. St. Louis Rams jersey
Guys like Steve Nash, Manu Ginobili, LeBron James, and Paul Pierce will make you pay if you let them hang around long enough. While it may be working for now, the Lakers need to get a little more of that killer instinct that they had last year and bury teams when they have the chance.

27 Dec 10 Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers Set for Finals Rematch: Just Like Old Times

Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesThanks to a rejuvenated Kevin Garnett, we can dowithout a pairpuppets and a possibleKobe/LeBron matchup becausewell be getting the next best thing: Boston vs. L.A. No disrespect to Orlando and Phoenix, but let be seriousit all about the Lakers and Celtics this year, again. It typically out of my character to just write teams off in the middle of a series, but why not? Everybody else is doing it. I couldn wait to get a crack at previewing this series, with so many twists and plots, it should be another great one.So if Boston and New England Patriots jersey
L.A. do eventually matchup for the 12th time in NBA Finals history, things should be pretty interesting. Despite the historic brilliance of both clubs, the Celtics/Lakers Finals series has been pretty one-sided so far. Boston owns a 9-2 edge in the series with their last victory coming in 2008, when visions of a Boston comeback, a Boston blowout, and Doc Rivers being doused with Gatorade defined the series. But things could be different this time around. Or could they? After all, Pau Gasol is a better player, Kobe Bryant is still Kobe Bryant and the rest of the Lakers are more experienced and better equipped to scrap with a rough and rugged Boston squad. But Boston is also sporting a different look these days. Gone is the dominance of the Big Three and in is the superstardom of All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo. Rondo emergence has continued the Celtics image of a lock and block defensive unit while upping the tempo and transforming them into a fast-paced drive and dish team. The Lakers have had a history of being openly victimized by athletic point guards and a new defensive game plan will have to be in order for a Finals rematch. Bryant exclusively locked up with Rondo in the 08 Finals in an effort to give him a rest on defense and out of New Orleans Saints jersey
chasing Boston sniper Ray Allen off screens. But Rondo was nowhere near the scorer in 08 that he is now so Bryant typically gave him an open cushion and the green light to launch jumpers. While perimeter shooter still isn one of Rondo strengths, it would be a huge mistake for the Lakers to put Bryant on him again should the teams meet. Rondo has stamina to burn while Bryant, 31, is nowhere near the thoroughbred he used to be. But L.A. will be in a tough position regardless because putting Derek Fisher on Rondo will be just an open invitation to the rim for the Celtics point guard.Therell be a lot of clashes in this possible series to keep note of; Ron Artest vs. Paul Pierce and Gasol vs. Kevin Garnett will both weigh heavily on the outcome but Boston doesn have a man to check Lamar Odom off the bench and with the way Odom is playing right now, the Celtics will definitely have to key on him.Everything about this series screams television viewership records from the names on the front of jerseys to the ones on the back. No other teams are hotter right now than the Lakers and Celtics. Los Angeles has turned into a scoring machine while Boston has been the premiere defensive unit of the postseason. It shouldn be long now, just have to wait for Orlando and New York Giants jersey
Phoenix to lie down and let history take its course. The last two NBA Champions set to slug it out in what could be the last hurrah for both clubs. Kobe vs. LeBron wouldve been nice but who needs puppets when you've got the Celtics and Lakers? This article is also featured onReading Sports with SteveDwriter

26 Dec 10 Westside Agony: Payback Time For the Lakers

Jim Rogash/Getty Images2008. A year that will live in infamy for all Laker fans.We ditched Smush Parker for Derek Fisher. We swapped Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol. Sasha Vujacic was shooting out of his mind. All was well in Hollywood. We swept an overrated Nuggets team that avoided Carolina Panthers jersey
defense like Sarah Palin avoids a textbook. We muscled through a Utah team that just could not get it done in LA.We ran circles around the San Antonio Spurs, as the youthful Lakers were just too much for the aging Spurs. We cruised through the playoffs, until we met Boston. Hardened, wizened, and determined, Boston's defense was unlike anything LA faced that year. Kendrick Perkins had his way with Gasol. Kobe was trying to play three-on-one. Sasha Vujacic was our only productive bench player. The Lakers were overwhelmed by Boston's physical game, and many Laker fans were overwhelmed by hatred. These Boston Celtics always seem to get in our way, don't they?Fast-forward to today. Instead of starting Luke Walton on Paul Pierce, we have Ron Artest to shut him down. Andrew Bynum tips the size factor to the Lakers favor. Odom off the bench is much more potent than what we had in 2008.2008 was agony. Seeing your beloved team so drastically outmatched by a hated rival burns like a never-fading Chicago Bears jersey
fire. And Game 6 was just too much. Having to watch your team thoroughly humiliated on the home floor of your most hated rival is beyond description. Now it's payback time. The Lakers must not be out-muscled. The Lakers must beat the Celtics at their own half-court game.Kobe, Pau, Derek, Ron-Ron, Drew, Lamar, Jordan, Shannon, Sasha, Luke, J-Powell, and DJ...for all the Laker fans who believe in you and support you to the very end...Give them hell.

25 Dec 10 The Big Everything: Shaquille O'Neal Burns Jim Rome!

Here's a likely answer to the question:There was this chap they called "The Diesel."Sometime during the summer of 2001, on a mutual whim, in the backyard of someone's house in Louisiana State University, he began to wrestle with a fifteen year old kid called "Big Baby." The kid today stands at 6'9" weighing about 260 lbs, but he was obviously a lot lighter back then. And a lot shorter too! That diesel guy? He stood over seven feet tall and weighed 350 lbs but it obviously didn't matter because the baby, overcome by a complete lack of Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
intimidation, lifted his idol up and body-slammed him to the floor. And the question? What was the question? You frame it.I'm thinking "When was the last time Shaquille O'Neal ate humble pie?"Because he just tasted it again.Remember that saying about not daring to feud with someone who buys ink by the barrel? I'm not sure what exactly it was but metaphorically, it probably implies that Shaq should have swallowed his pride when ESPN presenter Jim Rome stated that Shaq Fu's career wasn't as great as it could have been and "he never approached the game with the dedication or discipline as Kobe Bryant. The outspoken commentator and host of Jim Rome is Burning was making his remarks after news that The Big Aristotle (Yes! That's how "Wilt Chamberneezy" would alwayslike to be called ), signed with the Boston Celtics for the veteran's minimum salary. Now call Jim Rome cocky but he obviously can't be stupid. The man must have been expecting some backlash! After all, he didn't just criticize a beanie baby or a stuffed teddy bear. He criticized a man who:a) did that !b) did that again !c) did "that again" again !So you see, maybe Jim didn't remember those faded grainy memories. Maybe he just remembered the MDE (Most Dominant Ever) for his juvenile sense of humor. After all, "The Big Baryshnikov" once said his game was like Pythagoras's Theorem in that no one could figure it out!Maybe Rome called up Vlade Divac who reassured him that when "The Big Galactus" sang for him, it was all in playful jest. Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
Either way, he forgot that "The Big Cordially" was on twitter (making his new nickname shwitter/shitter/shaquitter?) and promptly retaliated through his three million followers."Jim rome, I am happy with my career and the legacy that I have left behind, obviously u r not happy with yur legacy I 4got u have no legacy" Thus spake "The Big Agave.""And forget the back and forth jim rome, I challenge u to a boxing match, live at espn studios, show the world if you can bak up the tuff talk"Thus spake "The Big Felon" some more."Dats what I thought jim rome dats what i thought......I knew, we knew it bock bock bock bock tuk your feathers n lol"Thus concluded "The Big Shaqovic."Of course, in the middle of these left-hook tweets was Jim Rome twitter-taunting O'Neal some more, claiming that he would do it for $8 million and not the veteran's minimum (which is what O'Neal will be paid) of $1.5 million.Common basketball knowledge accepts that while Shaquille O'Neal is certainly not the most dominant player ever (that's a default Wilt-owned title), there were periods in his career when his dominance was unparalleled and perhaps the greatest of his generation. At 38, with injuries slowing him down, "The Big Cactus" lacks the quickness of the drop-step that made him unstoppable in his prime; but at seven feet and three hundred pounds plus, he continues to remain an imposingphysical presence .And it's clear that he wants another ring before he retires thus making the Celtics his most viable option.Either way, a wounded lion still remembers the prey it used to hunt down and kill with brute power and finesse. No matter how old and crippled it gets, it knows what it used to do . And Shaq did it all, the three-peat of rings with his three-peat of Finals MVP awards. He Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
doesn't need a 40 or 50 year old talk show host to question his dedication to the game!Where was this Rome fellow when the Lakers three-peated on "The Big Shaqtus's" atlas-like shoulders or when he helped Dwayne Wade get Miami its first championship? Was Rome burning then?

24 Dec 10 Washington Wizards and Gilbert Arenas Both Want a Trade

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesHe may not admit it, but Gilbert Arenas has done everything in his power over the last year to try and get the Washington Wizards to trade him. The only problem is that the Washington Wizards did everything in their power to put themselves in a position to make Reebok New Orleans Saints #9 Drew Brees Realtree camo Jersey
him nearly impossible to move.It wasn’t but a few short years ago that “Agent Zero” was a fast-rising NBA star. He was one of the best players in the league and a fan favorite. He was a pioneer for the use of social media among athletes and that helped lead to his quickly increasing popularity.Add three years, a handful of injuries and significant off-the-court issues and you’re left with the current day Arenas. When Arenas faked an injury just days ago to “let Nick Young get more playing time,” it became quite obvious that he no longer cares about the Wizards or how much longer he is around. He continues to play coy about wanting to be traded, but is anyone buying his sarcastic banter?Arenas has showed absolutely no remorse for anything that he has done over the last year. He continually lied about the gun issue and he ended up paying for it. Now, after his fake injury, Arenas stands in front of the media and says, “Everything that I do now is someone tit-for-tat trying to blow it out of proportion. You know at the end of the day Nick is happy. He got to play, got to show that he can play—and I’m out here taking all the heat again.”You’re taking all the heat Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
because you’re the one that lied to your team. It’s not okay to lie to your team, no matter the reason. Another thing, if Arenas didn’t want anyone to know that he had lied, he would have kept it completely to himself. If he were truly doing it for the sake of his teammate, no one would have ever found out. He wanted his coaches and the media to make a big deal out of this because he knew it could only help get him out of town quicker.Surely the Washington Wizards want to send Arenas packing more than anything and not look back. Granted, they had to take John Wall with the top pick because he’s too good to pass up, but at that point, it was clear that Arenas no longer had a place on this team. He has embarrassed the front office, his coaches, his teammates and Wizards fans.FACT: They want him gone and would do anything in their power to trade him! However, there’s one problem. The six-year, $111 million contract that they signed him to isn’t up until after the 2013-14 season. Finding someone who is willing to take that along with the baggage that comes with Arenas is nearly impossible. As if his contract and the baggage aren’t enough to deter a possible trade, his injury woes should. In the 2007-08 and 2008-09 NBA seasons, Arenas played only 15 total games. Last year, he played 32, before being suspended for the “gun in the locker room” incident. That’s 47 games in three years. Yes, even Greg Oden Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
has played more than that. This is one issue where there is no telling what might happen. On one hand, there’s no way that I can see Arenas staying in Washington for four more years, but on the other hand, I can’t imagine who would actually trade to acquire his outrageous salary, high injury risk and childish antics. The Washington Wizards no longer want Gilbert Arenas and Gilbert Arenas no longer wants the Washington Wizards. The only problem for Arenas is that no other team wants him either and with every failed attempt to force Washington to trade him, he only pushes any potential suitors further away. It might be his only option to just GTFO of the NBA!This article is also featured onSPORTSorGTFO.com

23 Dec 10Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett and the Top 10 Power Forwards in the NBA Today

Dirk Nowitzki is off the a great start this season.Ronald Martinez/Getty Images1.) Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks Dallas Mavericks' power forward is having another stellar season so far as he ranks No. 1 on the list of top power forwards. Nowitzki is the heart and soul of the Mavericks and if San Diego Chargers jersey
they did not have him, they would be a subpar basketball team. The 2006-2007 MVP is averaging 24.4 points per game along with 8.4 rebounds. 2.) Amar'e Stoudemire, New York Knicks After being signed by the Knicks in the offseason, Amar'e stoudemire is quickly becoming a fan favorite in New York. Stoudemire had a successful career in Phoenix, and it is time for him to show that he was worth $100 million. Stoudemire is living up to his big contract coming off a 39-point performance against the Clippers. The big man is averaging 23.1 points and almost nine rebounds per game. 3.) Chris Bosh, Miami Heat We all know the Heat are not going to go 82-0, and they have been a disappointment, but it doesn't take away that Bosh is still one of the best power forwards in basketball. Granted, his numbers are down with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James as his teammates, but he is still having a solid start to the season. Bosh has averaged 20-plus points over the past five seasons and has established himself as a big time player in the NBA. Chris Bosh (Right) and his teammates LeBron James and Dywane Wade hope to get back on track for the Heat.Mike Ehrmann/Getty ImagesThe former Raptor is averaging 17 points and six rebounds per game. 4.) Carlos Boozer, Chicago Bulls Although Carlos Boozer has been injured for the start of this season, he is still among the top power forwards in the NBA. When Boozer returns, he and Derrick Rose will make one of the most dynamic duos in the San Francisco 49ers jersey
league. Boozer is averaging a double-double for his career, and it should be no difference once he enters the lineup for the Bulls. 5.) Paul Millsap, Utah Jazz Paul Millsap, the guy who took Carlos Boozer's place is having an outstanding start to the 2010-2011 season. The Jazz were confident that Millsap could take over and produce immediately. Producing is an understatement as Millsap is averaging 20 points and nine rebounds per game highlighted by a 46-point performance during a win over the Heat on November 9th. 6.) Luis Scola, Houston Rockets Luis Scola is having a big year so far.Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesTwelve games into this young NBA season, Luis Scola is having himself quite a year. Scola is a star in the making for the Rockets, and he is certainly showing off his abilities. Scola points per game has increased by six points since 2009, and if he keeps this up, he can potentially win Comeback Player of the Year. Scola is averaging 22.6 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game7.)Kevin Love, Minnesota TimberwolvesWhen Timberwolves' power forward gets the minutes he should, he puts up all-star quality numbers. Love's numbers have improved every season since he has been in the NBA, and he is having his best season so far as a pro.The third-year man out of UCLA is averaging a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. His season has been highlighted by his memorable 31-point, 31-rebound performance in a win against the Knicks on November 12th. 8.) Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs Tim Duncan's numbers are decreasing, but you can not talk about the best power forwards in the league with mentioning Tim Duncan. Duncan is arguably the best power forward of all time as he has led the Spurs to four NBA championships. Duncan is averaging a double-double for his career and is nearly doing it again this season. Kevin Garnett remains one of the top power forwards in the NBA.Mike Ehrmann/Getty ImagesDuncan is putting up 13 points and nine rebounds per game this season. 9.) Kevin Garnett, Boston Celtics Like Duncan, Garnett has to be brought up when you are discussing power forwards in the NBA. Garnett and Duncan have had to move over for the young starsSeattle Seahawks jersey
in the league but they definitely remain among the elite players in the NBA. This double-double machine is having another solid season for the Celtics and hopes to bring them back to the NBA Finals. Garnett is averaging a solid 15 points and nine rebounds per contest. 10.)Josh Smith, Atlanta HawksJosh Smith is a part of the young talented core of the Atlanta Hawks, and what fun he is to watch. Smith is the youngest player in NBA history to reach 1,000 blocks, and he is on a block spree again this season.Josh Smith is averaging 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks per game.(Players included on this list were either listed as a power forward or a forward-center)

Is Amar'e Stoudemire an upgrade over David Lee?

Prior to the conclusion of the 2009-10 NBA season, New York Knicks starting center David Lee was playing on borrowed time, despite becoming the first Knickerbocker selected to participate in an All-Star Game since Allan Houston and Latrell Sprewell in 2001.So when Knicks President of Reebok Green Bay Packers #12 Aaron Rodgers Realtree camo Jersey
Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh completed his mission of clearing enough salary cap space to sign two elite free agents this summer, it virtually guaranteed that Lee would not be returning to New York next season. The final nail in the coffin for Lee, who led the Knicks in scoring and rebounding, was Amar’e Stoudemire agreeing to sign a five-year, $100 million contract with the Knicks; leaving New York unable to resign the St. Louis native if their plans to attract another premiere free agent come to fruition. Therefore, with the writing clearly on the wall, it would Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
be as an appropriate time as any to analyze what the Knicks would be losing in David Lee versus what New York will be gaining in Amar’e Stoudemire.Click here to read the rest of this article on Examiner.com, which includes relevant links and a special 'Welcome to New York, Amar'e' video.

Cliff Lee Spurns Yankees, Rangers, Takes Less Money To Pitch For Phillies

Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesAs The New York Times‘ Ben Shpigel wrote two days ago, a 26-year-old pitcher by the name of Greg Maddux received a lucrative contract offer from the New York Yankees in 1992. The deal spanned five years and was worth $34 million, which was tremendous amount of money then.Maddux thought about the offer, was visited by the Yankees brass, and then, when it was believed he would take it, the Atlanta Braves swooped in and nabbed the left-handed pitcher who would go on to be a member of the best rotation in baseball history Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
and win a total of 355 games. They offered him $six million less to remain in the national league where he had previously pitched with the Chicago Cubs.Shipgel wrote this piece to show that the Yankees don’t always get what they want. But not even he knew that what happened in 1992 would indeed happen again, just with another pitcher, another team and much, much more money.Lee, 32, agreed to sign late Monday night with the Mystery Team everyone was talking about, the Philadelphia Phillies. New York offered him a seven-year deal worth $154 million. Instead, he took a contract worth approximately $12 million over five years to go back to the national league–where he pitched for Philadelphia in 2009.This was a stunning decision, albeit admirable, and for this Red Sox fan a joy to see. Within three hours of Philadelphia’s confirmation as the much-ballyhooed mystery team in the Lee sweepstakes, his agent, Darren Braunecker, called the Yankees to inform them they were out of the running while Lee personally phoned Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels to tell him his plans.New York not getting a personal call from the ace left-hander was priceless, and was a fitting end to their chase.I wanted Lee to return to Texas. I thought he fit with that young, up-and-coming team. Though it is not known when Philadelphia indeed entered the bidding, returning to the City of Brotherly Love was a very smart choice on his part.It was an admirable one, too. Not many players in this day and age of baseball leave that much money on the table. With the way he was dragging the negotiations out I thought for sure he would be a money-grabber like the majority of star major-leaguers, and go to the highest bidder—presumably New York. Instead of seeing dollar signs he Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
saw a comfortable situation. He now joins a rotation that rivals the 1990's Braves. Maddux, signing with Atlanta, joined future Hall of Famers John Smoltz and Tom Glavine on the staff. This trio won 57 games in Maddux’s first season with the team. Lee, signing with Philadelphia, joins Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels—a trio that has combined to win 379 games and, last year, went 40-22 with a sparkling 2.41 ERA. Lee’s addition transforms a solid rotation into a scary one that could be as dominant as the aforementioned Atlanta trio was.Heading back to the national league, where he faces opposing pitchers instead of designated hitters (which had to factor into his decision), he leaves the Rangers and Yankees searching for answers. Texas has the pieces to now go out and make a trade for Kansas City Royals ace Zack Greinke, who is on the trade market.New York could do the same, but they are put in a more difficult position in missing out on Lee’s golden left arm. As Shipgel alluded to, they are supposed to sign the top free agents. Money is supposed to talk. In fact, the Rangers indeed offered more. But that’s not what will leave a sour taste in New York’s mouth, a mouth that is currently spewing expletives right and left in dismay. They watched as Adrian Gonzalez was traded to the Red Sox. Then they watched Carl Crawford sign with the Red Sox. Now, Lee says thanks but no thanks. They get what is coming to them. They didn’t covet Gonzalez. They only wined and dined Crawford as a way to stir up the pot. But it’s the principle of the matter. Their rival makes two monumental moves and they come up empty. It’s hard to put into words how I felt when I read on Twitter than New York was out of the running. I pictured George Steinbrenner rolling in his grave, his two sons, Hank and Hal, as well as general manager Brian Cashman, dumbfounded. They, as well as the Rangers brass, are spared from making such a long-term commitment to a Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
32-year-old. New York’s offer, though similar in years and money to Texas, stands out. It was a desperate, risky attempt to get the player they coveted, to answer Boston, and to show that they can once more get money to talk. In the end, it didn’t work, putting a smile on my face that won’t go away anytime soon.As a result, somewhere Maddux watched this unfold and must have nodded his head approvingly. If only more players were like them. This article is also featured onSwamigp's Sports Blog

20 Dec 10 Bears-Vikings: Has the Magic Finally Returned for Minnesota?

Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesMinnesota Vikings at Chicago BearsSunday Nov. 14, 2010 1 p.m. ESTLine: Minnesota -2OverviewThe Vikings seemed to have a little bit of their 2009 magic sprinkled on them last week in their incredible come-from-behind victory against Arizona. They will look to have that momentum carry over into Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. While the Bears began the season with a 4-1 record, they stand at 5-3, beating only the 1-7 Panthers and 0-7 Bills in their last five games.Keys to Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
the GameJared Allen toyed with the Cardinals, coming up with 2.5 sacks. While Brett Favre has regressed this season, so has the Minnesota defense and Allen in particular. He has a great opportunity to have another multiple-sack game. Jay Cutler had all day long to throw against the Bills, but he might not be so lucky against Minnesota. The Bears are still dead last in sacks allowed this year with 32. The offensive line is going to be abused by No. 69.Julius Peppers hasn’t had a sack since Week 4, but he still manages to terrorize quarterbacks throughout the course of a game. Peppers is one of those guys you have to account for at all times. He always commands the attention of two players on offense and still manages to make quarterbacks uncomfortable in the pocket. That being said, his sack numbers are way down this season. It would be nice to see Peppers’ sack total match his production.Just when it seemed like Brett Favre might be down for the count, he threw for a career-high 446 yards and two touchdowns in a remarkable comeback victory. A big part of his success has to be attributed directly to Percy Harvin. Harvin caught nine passes for 146 yards, giving him his second 100 yard game in a row. The Vikings have been missing a go-to guy at wide receiver. It turns out the Sydney Rice injury and Randy Moss departure have made Percy Harvin that guy. Favre has an receiver he can depend on and since the Bears have made a habit of Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
shutting down running backs, the Vikings are going to rely heavily on Harvin on Sunday. The Bears are as stingy as they come when it comes to run defense, but Adrian Peterson is unstoppable. The Bears have a ferocious defense that is full of run stopping machines. That being said, Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the league. He has already scored seven touchdowns on the ground and rushed for 857 yards. Peterson does not shy away from contact. The last time the Bears faced a running back who could even draw comparisons to the threat Peterson poses on the ground was Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw posted 133 yards in his game against Chicago. Peterson will look to duplicate that performance.Chicago hasn’t lost a game this season where Jay Cutler has thrown more touchdowns than interceptions. Cutler needs time to be successful. When he gets that time, he looks like an All-Pro. When he doesn’t, he looks like a back up. The Bears rely on Cutler to be successful on offense. Matt Forte has all but disappeared since the Bears got off to their great start, so the Bears struggle when Cutler does. Cutler complimented his offensive line in the post game interview and thinks they have the right group in place. If the Vikings disrupt Cutler’s rhythm, we are going to see the Jay Cutler that has some Bears fans wondering why the organization gave up so much to acquire him.Who Covers on Sunday?Who Covers on Sunday?Bears18.7%Vikings81.3%Total votes: 187Wrap UpBoth of these teams are difficult to read. You have two teams who came close to being served a loss against struggling teams last week, but managed to come away with a victory. This game comes Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
down to the quarterback play. Favre will have the better game in all likelihood as his ankle heals and he continues to build on his recent success with Percy Harvin.Jay Cutler’s perception of his offensive line could change quickly if Jared Allen gets loose, so I’m going with the Vikings in this one, though I am reluctant to do so.Free NFL Pick: Minnesota -2

18 Dec 10 Donovan McNabb Receives Extension From Washington Redskins, Financial Apology No. 2

Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesFrom ESPN.com:The Washington Redskins and quarterback Donovan McNabb have agreed to a five-year, $78 million extension which could be worth up to $88 million with incentives, a source with knowledge of the agreement told ESPN NFL Insider Michael Smith. The source Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
said $40 million of the deal will be guaranteed. On the day in which Donovan McNabb will take on his former team for the second time this season, it looks like the Eagles will see a whole lot more of McNabb in the future.McNabb’s new deal comes just two weeks after he was benched by head coach Mike Shanahan in the final two minutes against the Lions. Shanahan chose to go with Rex Grossman in favor of McNabb, citing multiple reasons including his lack of knowledge of the plays and cardiovascular endurance. When the Eagles were shopping McNabb, it was known that whoever ended up with the quarterback would likely extend him. This didn’t happen early on in Washington, and it didn’t exactly seem like McNabb was performing in a manner that Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
deserved an extension. However, we were told that McNabb and the Redskins were in contract talks during the bye week and they were obviously able to work something out.Does McNabb deserve the extension? In my eyes, not really.Sure, he has a great track record in Philadelphia. But he hasn’t accomplished much in a Redskins uniform. His play has been lackluster. I don’t think the blame can be squarely put on McNabb’s shoulders, as he has a shaky offensive line and limited play makers on his team.Despite this, I think the Redskins Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
have really stuck their neck out on this one. I think they overpaid McNabb here, but I guess he’s more proven then anyone else they could potentially draft.Congratulations to McNabb for getting your pay day, and we’ll see you soon. This article is also featured onBirdsFan.com - A Philadelphia Eagles Blog

17 Dec 10 Cleveland Browns: Another Sunday, Another Loss, but Team Is Close To Contending

Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy leads, what his now his team, on the fieldMike Ehrmann/Getty ImagesAfter 10 games of the 2010 season, the Cleveland Browns record stands at 3-7. To say the least, this season has a been a wild one, but it can be argued that this year's Browns are a lot better than their 3-7 record Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
states. In '09, the Browns finished the season 4-0, giving the fans high hopes for this season. In the offseason, the QB position wasaddressedby signing two veteran quarterbacks and drafting college star Colt McCoy.When the season started, though, the Browns went back to old ways,openingthe2010 campaign0-3.When the Browns failed to win games over beatableopponents(Tampa Bay and Kansas City) and blew a lead over the division rival Baltimore Ravens, fans were again screaming for a coaching change. It has been my belief all season long that once team president Mike Holmgren decided to retain Eric Mangini as coach, that meant he was our coach for the long haul. Holmgren saw that the players were buying into Mangini's system and deserved a chance to prove he could get the job done.In Week 5 of this season, the Browns found a blessing in disguise. Both veteran quarterbacks went down, forcing rookie Colt McCoy into the starting position.Due to the surprising play of Colt McCoy, and great play by the defense, the BrownsReebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
were able to upset New Orleans and New England. The tough stretch of gamescontinuedwhen the New York Jets came into town. In a hard-fought battle, the Browns lost in overtime.Brian Robiskie has 16 catches in two seasons as a proJamie Squire/Getty ImagesIt was hard to be toodisappointed, though, because it was obvious the Browns had finally found their quarterback. Now back in real-time, the Browns have just lost another close one to the Jacksonville Jaguars after being riddled with injuries. Any brief hopeof reachingthe playoffs has now been crushed, so it's time to askourselves:How far from contending are the Browns? The season's mostdisappointingplayers are WR Brian Robiskie and CB Eric Wright. Robiskie was the hometown kid drafted in the early second round. He was supposed to redeem himself after being deactivated for most of his rookie year. Although he has been in the starting lineup every game, this season hehas produced only nine catches. In my opinion, it's time to give up on Robiskie. He should be traded for a bag of peanuts and a hot dog to be chosen later.CB Eric Wright had the best season of his career last year, and it was the hope of all in the Browns organization that Wright and rookie draft pick Joe Haden would be the cornerstones of Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
the Browns defense in the future.Wright, in the last year of his contract, has now had the worst season of his career, leaving the Browns unsure of the cornerback position once again. The moral of the story is that so far this season has been nothing short of entertaining, with wins over eliteopponentsand losses to lesser teams. The Browns still have some building to do, but they are getting very close.

16 Dec 10 NFL Fantasy Football Start/Sit Week 12: Shaun Hill In, Carson Palmer Out

Tom Pennington/Getty ImagesHere’s some sit and start advice as you set your lineups for Week 12 of the NFL season. QuarterbacksStart:Shaun Hill, Detroit LionsHill makes an excellent play against the Patriots this week. He has great weapons in Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Brandon Pettigrew. Jahvid Best is hurting so the Lions won’t have much of a ground game to rely on. The Patriots are allowing 300 yards per game through the air. Plus, Shaun Hill has delivered in just about every game he’s played in. Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
Add it all up and Hill should be in fantasy lineups more often than not this week. Sit:Carson Palmer, Cincinnati BengalsThe Bengals have become so bad they blew a 31-14 halftime lead to the Bills, allowing Buffalo to outscore them 35-0 in the second half. They take on the Jets this week, who completely shut down Chad Ochocinco last year. With Cromartie on board, the Jets have two cornerbacks who can hold their own against T.O. and Ocho. Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesRunning BacksStart:BenJarvus Green-Ellis, New England PatriotsThe Law Firm is averaging 111.5 total yards and 0.5 touchdowns over the past two games against Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. This week, he faces a Detroit team that is allowing 130.6 rushing yards per game. They have also allowed 11 rushing touchdowns.Ronnie Brown, Miami DolphinsI have long been a huge Ronnie Brown fan. I typically rank him a little higher than most because I loved his ability. This year, I have been pretty down on him. This week, though, I’m back on his bandwagon. He should succeed against a Raiders defense that’s allowing 128.5 rushing yards per game. Sit:Brandon Jackson, Green Bay PackersJackson has averaged 77.5 total yards with three touchdowns in his past four games. This week, he takes on Atlanta, who has allowed 95.4 rushing yards per game and just three rushing touchdowns. Jim Rogash/Getty Images Wide ReceiversStart:Deion Branch, New England PatriotsBranch had nearly identical games in Weeks 10 & 11, catching seven passes in both games for 70 & 71 yards respectively. The Patriots will target him plenty once again as they look to slow the Lions’ passing attack.Steve Breaston, Arizona CardinalsBreaston is averaging 91.3 yards in his past four games, and the Cardinals’ lack of ground game should mean a lot of pass attempts again this week. The Niners are allowing 235.5 passing yards per game along with 15 touchdown passes. Sit:Chad Ochocinco, Cincinnati BengalsI know, easier said than done, but the Jets have had his number, holding him to a combined two catches for 28 yards in back-to-back games last year. He’s only topped six fantasy points in four of Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
his ten games this year. Tight EndsStart:Tony Moeaki, Kansas City ChiefsYou’ll have to monitor his status, but assuming he’s recovered from his concussion, he makes and excellent play against a soft Seattle pass defense. Sit:Rob Gronkowski, New England PatriotsGronkowski came back to Earth after his three touchdown game to catch one pass for 25 yards. He just doesn’t get enough looks to trust as your TE1. DefensesStart:Cleveland BrownsThe Browns defense was one that I was high on for this week’s game against Carolina, before they racked up the fantasy points against Jacksonville. The Panthers just don’t have enough weapons to compete, especially on the road. Look for multiple sacks and turnovers without many points scored. Sit:Chicago BearsAfter making the Dolphins look like minnows on Thursday, the Bears have to take on the red hot Philadelphia Eagles. They may get a few sacks on Michael Vick, but the Birds only have 11 turnovers on the Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
year. NFL Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Getting Your Team Playoff-Ready

Sam BradfordJustin Edmonds/Getty ImagesLike a bizarre scavenger hunt, if you’ve made it this far, congratulations. The fantasy landscape was a bumpy one in 2010, and for every undrafted waiver gem like Peyton Hillis, there were plenty of so-called drafted “studs” that fell flat, like Randy Moss and Brandon Marshall. The waiver wire helped unearth players like Hillis, Blount and Lloyd, and could conceivably help you win a fantasy championship if you are willing to do a little legwork and hope for the best. nfl jerseys
In my last “Hot Garbage” column of the year, I’m going to highlight players you should add for depth in the ever-important playoff games of Week 15 and 16... *TIP: Target NFC and AFC West Players: I mentioned “Go West, young man,” in earlier articles and podcasts and articles on the Pharmacy, and I haven’t changed my stance. Both divisions feature rather soft schedules for the playoff weeks (15/16), and everyone, I mean EVERYONE has a legit shot at winning their divisions. Factor in that no team (other than San Diego), has a legit defense, and that makes for tasty fantasy numbers in potential shootouts in those weeks. QBs: Sam Bradford, STL: I'm hard-pressed to ever recommend a rookie QB, but Bradford is special. Factor in that he throws the ball to a lot of different WRs every week, it makes him the most valuable fantasy player on their team, aside from Steven Jackson. If he’s not locked in as your backup, get him now. He has two home matchups in Weeks 15 and 16 vs. KC and SF respectively, and both teams struggle on the road. Legarrette BlountHarry How/Getty ImagesJosh Freeman, TB:The feisty Bucs have a lot of fight in them, and I imagine they’ll be in the mix for a playoff spot right down to the wire. When you consider they get both DET and SEA at HOME, well, what the hell are you waiting for?! RBs: Legarette Blount,TB:I’d like to thank one guy who dropped him in one of my leagues (thanks, Ryan!), because with my No. 2 RBs struggling a little, having the No. 1 RB in TB face the aforementioned Lions and Seahawks at home should heap hefty rewards. Darren McFadden, OAK:I know, I know, who the hell would drop Darren McFadden, RIGHT? In smaller leagues, after two less than stellar performances, some folks have. The savvy fantasy players are mortgaging their last waiver wires pennies to grab him, because he faces quite possibly the easiest fantasy schedule against the run you can imagine...Week 15 at home vs. DEN, and vs. INDY in Week 16. If by any minuscule chance he’s there, MORTGAGE THE FARM!*Monday Night Update 11/30: Brian Westbrook/SF: Former fantasy stud Brian Westbrook is the hot name today with news of Frank Gore quite possible being finished for the season with a fractured hip. Westbrook looked great in relief, racking up 136 yds/ 1TD and a stout 5.9 yds a carry. Granted it was against a sorry Arizona run defense, but if Westbrook can stay healthy and is in the very least, 80% of his former self, he should flourish with a mobile play-action QB like Troy Smith, and could be a genius add in PPR formats as well. Get in your waiver priority now, while the getting is good. WRs: Danario Alexander, STL:Former “Hot Garbage” star had “Turkey Bacon” written all over him, when he went down with a knee injury after showing Steelers jersey
some promise early in the season. The former Mizzou standout is an injury risk for sure, but with a soft schedule and big play potential, what have you got to lose? Stash him now and watch closely leading up to the playoffs. Danario AlexanderDilip Vishwanat/Getty ImagesSteve Johnson, BUF: Not since Ray Finkel, has one man had the bear the brunt of a hapless fan base. Steve Johnson’s inexplicable drop this past week cost his team a win against the overrated Pittsburgh Steelers. All is not lost though, If former “Flex Luthor” standount and “Hot Garbage” All-Star is on your WW, GET. HIM. NOW. The Bills defense is scrappy, but they still give up a ton of points, so with visits to MIA (Week 15), and hosting NE at home (Week 16), the Bills should have to produce a ton of points. The cerebral QB of the Bills, Ryan Fitzpatrick, loves him some Stevie Johnson, so he should be busy in potential blowouts. Jacoby Ford, OAK:From the Mike Wallace School of Speedy Wide Receivers who get Huge Separation. Ford has come up big twice now, and as stated earlier, the Raiders have a really easy schedule for Weeks 15 and 16. He may be hit-or-miss week to week, but like Mike Wallace before him, his upside is HUGE. TEs: Joel Dreesen, HOU: When a QB struggles, he looks to his TE. When that TE is oft injured (like Owen Daniels), he looks to his backup. In this case, it’s the reliable Joel Dreesen. Granted, week to week he can float you low double digit numbers, and if you’re like me and focus more on QB/WR/RB numbers, that’s just fine with me. The Texans face TENN and DEN in Weeks 15 and 16, which shape up to be nice matchups for Dreesen. Tony Moeaki/KC: The numbers weren’t huge, but he did score in a game where his services weren’t needed due to the Charles/Bowe juggernaut scoring machine. It is telling for two reasons though: Matt Cassel still looks his way in the red zone, and he finally appears healthy. With a trip to STL in Week 15 and TENN coming to KC in Week 16, there’s nothing scary about that schedule. Moeaki could get you those low double digits that are like water to parched football jersey
fantasy player in the desert that is tight end production this year. Jacoby FordEzra Shaw/Getty ImagesSitting On "Defense": Atlanta Falcons Granted, they’ve allowed some points this year, and aren’t a shutdown D, but with a trip to SEA and hosting a HUGE GAME vs. New Orleans (in their house, where they’re undefeated this year), I like their chances. Picker Kicker: Sebastian Janikowski, OAK:I take two things under consideration when choosing a playoff kicker: 1) Is the team struggling in the red zone? and 2), are the elements favorable? We’re talking late December here, and with two games at home, Seabass should be good vs. DEN and IND respectively.

Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers: Path Back To Success Starts Sunday

Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesIf there's one thing we learned from the Houston Texans win/brawl over the Tennessee Titans in Week 12, it's that killing two birds with one stone can be done at the drop of a hat this season.Fatigue, depression and uneasiness—three fairly simple words that have plagued the Green Bay Packers this week.A loss to the Atlanta Falcons last weekend in the Georgia Dome sent Mike McCarthy's men searching for answers after allowing yet another late field-goal loss, and with a trip back home to 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
Lambeau Field awaiting against San Francisco, the green and gold aren't looking as solid as we originally thought.Curse that special teams unit.Yes, once again the Packers special teams play has let them down in a crucial game. Forget the term "broken record," because Green Bay has been plagued with this problem since the get-go this season, and at the end of the day haven't taken the right steps to correct the problem.Mike McCarthy does like to tell us otherwise, mind you. When queried on Green Bay's poor special teams coverage in the dying stages of last week's game, the Packer head coach had no trouble steering attention in the opposite direction."You don't line up on Sunday afternoon and you're given one opportunity to win the game," Mike McCarthy told reporters. "There's hundreds of different types of opportunities that go on inside that game, and you can break it down by play. Did you win the play or did you lose the play? And when you're winning 60 percent-plus of your plays, you should be winning those games. There was a lot of offensive production this past week, but the bottom line is we didn't get in the end zone enough."Call me yellow, but perhaps the Packers' main man is right. Despite Aaron Rodgers' typical last-touch heroics against the Falcons last week, Green Bay had noticeable difficulty advancing from the goal line to across the plain, even though this is a massive credit to Mike Smith's defense. So why have the Packers struggled immensely to post points on the board in key games?Join me in saying, Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley.Say what you will about Grant's questionable run ability in the past two or three years, Green Bay quite often relied on the fact that they could hand the ball off to their power rusher, or better yet sling him out on an old-fashioned slant route and find him wide open in the end zone.As for Jermichael Finley, the less said the better. Finley recorded five total touchdowns last season for 676 yards, and although the Packers have masked the absence of their star tight end quite nicely this year—you can't tell me that Mike McCarthy isn't missing No. 88's presence when the game is on the line.Maybe these two factors account for the Packers 9-0 field-goal shutout win over the New York Jets nearly a month ago, huh?Back to the real issue though: The Packers special teams unit must step up this weekend against the San Francisco 49ers. Firstly, the Packers do need to rely on some explosive kick returns out of Sam Shields, who has struggled to allow Aaron Rodgers decent field position for much of the year.Secondly, the coverage must live up to the task. The 49ers may not possess a DeSean Jackson or Devin Hester type kick returner, but at the same time Tedd Ginn Jr. has been looking to burst out for his first touchdown on the year.Keeping the concerning trend going for one last minute, the Packers special teams statistics are just as dismal as San Francisco's. Currently Green Bay haven't found the end zone all year on kick returns, and the fact that the Packers opponents outweigh them 1,226 to 883 in yards, the story is pretty much told.Steering away from special teams controversy, Green Bay must now realize the true importance of Aaron Rodgers. While most of the roster more than likely does, last weekend only acted as another reminder of No. 12's talent, but with this in mind, the Packers can't keep allowing Rodgers to do all of 36 Bettis Black Jersey
the talking following a disappointing loss."I told the guys before the game last week: I said, 'It's going to be a 60-minute game, and it could be a play that happens in the first, second, third or fourth quarter that wins the game or loses the game,'" Aaron Rodgers said. "And, unfortunately, I was foreshadowing a play in the second quarter that possibly could have cost us the game. But, unfortunately, you never know when that play is going to be."Is this really the image the Packers wish to promote? Sure, Peyton Manning does most of the talking in Indianapolis, but for once it would be nice to see the rest of the team grasp the microphone and offer an opinion or thought on how a problem could be resolved.Keys for the game?Barring what has already been said, the Packers finally must take advantage of the 49ers' latest injury list victim—Frank Gore. Mike Singletary has been sent back to the drawing board this week, and now that veteran rusher Brian Westbrook takes over the starting role, expect Dom Capers' 3-4 defense to be ready for a feast.Other than the 49ers loss at the running back spot, putting pressure on San Francisco's 10th-ranked defense is vital. Aaron Rodgers is more than capable, but it would be a luxury to see the Packers establish a run game for once rather than just relying on wide receiver play.Last but not least, Green Bay needs to also pressurize Troy Smith. On Monday Night Football last week the 49ers starter had a mediocre game, passing for 129 yards, one touchdown and one interception. This performance marked the second bad week in a row for Smith, and now the Packers look to go for the hat trick.A "chance" card has been drawn in the Packers' hand, and Green Bay really needs to capitalize on it. San Francisco at the same time face a big opportunity, as a win over the Packers could lead to first spot in the NFC West.Still, with the Bears now up one game in the NFC North, Green Bay needs to get back on the right track this weekend and delight their hometown fans. A loss would be a shock, and a win would be a huge bonus heading into a slightly weak matchup against Detroit in Week 14.An 8-4 record is on the line, and everybody must fulfill their duty this week. 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey

Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Kimo von Oelhofen Antwaan Randle El

So what do you do during free agency if you're the defending Super Bowl champions? If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, not much. Thus far, anyway, the Steelers have played the offseason game predictably close to the vest. Already, three starters have escaped from the team that crawled Steelers 36 Bettis Jersey
out from under a Wild Card rock to win four straight in the postseason, culminating in a 21-10 victory over Seattle on Super Sunday. Defensive end Kimo von Oelhofen signed with the New York Jets, safety Chris Hope fled to Tennessee and wide receiver/kick returner Antwaan Randle El will play for the Washington Redskins in 2006.None of those departures, however, is expected to hurt the champs too much. Brett Keisel -- who had three sacks last year and two more in the playoffs -- is expected to step in for von Oelhofen. Cedrick Wilson looks ready to replace Randle El, and the Steelers signed free agent safety Ryan Clark from Washington to take the place of Hope.At this point, the biggest loss appears to be in the area of punt returns, where Randle El was one of the league's best.Clark, meanwhile, could be an upgrade. He called defensive signals for the Redskins last season, is about the same size (5-11, 205) and speed as Hope, and said of his reasons to come to Pittsburgh: "Just the camaraderie and integrity they play with, and the love the city and the organization have for the team." An LSU product, Clark had three interceptions last year.Meanwhile, the Steelers got center Jeff Hartings to rework his salary and convinced RB Duce Staley -- injured much of 2005 -- to take a pay cut in return for some performance bonuses. The team also re-signed cornerback Deshea Townsend (who almost went to New England), and retained some key backups like TE Jerame Tuman and Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
quarterback Charlie Batch. Despite the glut of experienced and high-profile quarterbacks floating around the league, the Rooney philosophy is not to spend a lot of money on spare parts. Batch did just fine when Ben Roethlisberger was hurt last year, and he knows Bill Cowher's system intimately.Like most Super Bowl champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers have little room to maneuver under the cap. And given their 2005 success, there seems little reason for major changes.

San Francisco 49ers Joe Montana

Back in 2002 former San Francisco 49ers great Joe Montana was diagnosed with hypertension. That revelation has led Montana to promote the importance of screening for high blood pressure. He seems to have teamed up with Novartis to coordinate an awareness campaign for both Lotrel, a medication manufactured by Novartis which helps treat blood pressure, and for the importance of regular screenings. His next stop will be in Detroit where he will speak to a group of police officers, firefighters, and medical workers about how the nature of Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
their jobs makes them more likely to suffer from high blood pressure. It's good to know that if Joe Montana is going to hawk a product (like many big name former NFL greats do) at least the product he chooses to promote is something that can help save lives. The San Francisco 49ers will have a new executive in 2006 and he will be a "football guy". After publicly campaigning for the addition of a President position in the 49ers front office just a few weeks ago, head coach Mike Nolan succeeded in convincing team owner John York to go that route. Nolan has already discussed the position with Seattle Seahawks vice president Mike Reinfeldt, Atlanta Falcons executive vice president Ray Anderson, St. Louis Rams executive vice-president Bob Wallace as well as former Broncos and Cardinals general manager Bob Ferguson.Bringing a football guy into the front office is a great sign of things to come for this current 49ers administration. It means that the normally business-minded York is truly committed to turning San 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
Francisco back into a champion and is willing to turn the reigns over to his head coach instead of allowing fiscal issues determine the course of the franchise.Hopefully, these off-field moves will translate into wins on the football field sooner than later. (0)

San Francisco 49ers Arnaz Battle Bryan Gilmore Taylor Jacobs

Put simply, Alex Smith needs playmakers to succeed. Drafting Vernon Davis last year was a step in the right direction, as was the addition of free agent Ashley Lelie this offseason. But a casual glance at the team's receiving corps shows that even with the recent upgrades, improvements must 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
be made:Bryan Gilmore - Judging by Gilmore's 2006 stat line, you may have thought it was his rookie season: eight catches for 150 yards and a single touchdown. Sadly, it was actually his seventh pro season, and that means he's already hit his incredibly low ceiling. For his pro career, Gilmore has averaged six catches and 97 yards per year. Arnaz Battle - Battle is the team's second wideout, but looking at the alternatives will tell you he earned the job by default. At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds and without exceptional speed, Battle is better suited for slot duty and likely wouldn't be a No. 2 receiver for any other team in the conference. The Niners can make do with him in his current role, but relying on him long term is asking a lot from Alex Smith. Battle is an OK player with decent hands, but the former college quarterback may have reached his peak with 686 receiving yards a year ago. Taylor Jacobs - If you look up the word "bust" on Wikipedia, Jacobs would be listed amongst other notable University of Florida receivers who failed to meet expectations at the pro level (Ike Hilliard, Jabar Gaffney, among others). After a solid college career, Jacobs has accumulated a meager 34 receptions for 344 yards and a touchdown in four years as a pro. In other words, he has produced what Torry Holt and Marvin Harrison do in a month, though it has taken him four seasons to do it. It's hard to believe Jacobs still has a job. It seems unlikely that the team will spend the 11th overall pick on a wide receiver, considering that the need for a true 3-4 down lineman supersedes the need for a wideout. Even the best college wide receiver's typically struggle in their first year or two (i.e. Rashaun Woods), so selecting one a few rounds later, minus the pressure of immediate statistical success that comes with being a first round pick, makes sense. The current draft class is also especially deep at WR, so selecting one in the third round or beyond may actually yield a talent who is comparable to a first- 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey black jersey
or second-rounder in years past. And though a late-round receiver selection may not be what some Niners fans would prefer, how much less productive could that player be than Taylor Jacobs?Questions?

Jacksonville Jaguars sign Sammy Knight

Not too overly confident in their 21- and 24-year-old starting safeties, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran Sammy Knight to a one-year deal worth $820,000.Commentary: The Jags current slated starters are third-year SS Gerald Sensabaugh and rookie Reggie Nelson, who have a combined four NFL starts between them. Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
Knight, who last played for the Kansas City Chiefs, has appeared in 158 games in 10 years for three different teams. The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder carries 939 tackles and 38 interceptions with him to Jacksonville.Fantasy Football Impact: This is good news for an already strong Jacksonville defense. The Jags' 'D' finished No. 2 overall in the NFL last season, and it capped off the regular season 10th against the pass. With these key offseason additions to their secondary, though, expect even better this season.Anthony acarroll . The Jacksonville Jaguars running game earned a reputation this past season and deservedly so. It was a major part of Jacksonville's regular-season success and playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Veteran Fred Taylor was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Maurice Jones-Drew nearly won rookie of the year in 2006 and had a solid sophomore season. But don't forget about Greg Jones. Jones on Wednesday signed the richest contract for a fullback in NFL history, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. Jones' five-year deal reportedly is worth $17 million. After sitting out the entire 2006 season because of a torn ACL suffered in the preseason, Jones established himself as perhaps the best lead blocker in the league in 2007. He also scored four touchdowns (two rushing and two receiving) and was named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl. "I feel I can do better than what I did last season," Jones said. "They always say it's a year after the surgery that you become your normal self. Hopefully, this 2008 year will be better than 2007." Proximity played a role in Jones' decision to stay with Jacksonville. A native of Beaufort, S.C., Jones played at Florida State before being drafted by the Jaguars in 2004. "My family and I talked about (staying in Jacksonville)," Jones said. "I always wanted to stay here. It's close to home, and it's close to Tallahassee." And blocking for backs such as Taylor and Jones-Drew doesn't hurt, either. Taylor rushed for over 1,000 yards for 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
the seventh time in nine seasons and Jones-Drew added 768 yards and nine touchdowns. "Blocking for those guys is going to make me look good," Jones said. "That was one of the reasons for me to stay here - them, (running backs) coach (Kennedy) Pola, the offense - just the guys on the team. I love the guys on the team. I can see the future is going to be good."

Jacksonville Jaguars, Jack Del Rio, Gregg Williams

When Gregg Williams was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars, there was lots of speculation about the move. Most of all, some people just didn't understand it.Why? It makes perfect sense. While Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio specializes on defense, he's shown that he's not afraid to delegate Dallas Cowboys jersey
responsibility. After Mike Smith left to become head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Del Rio moved quickly to secure Williams' services. The move also demonstrates that Del Rio is plenty comfortable in his situation, something of a rarity in the NFL. He has no job security issues, which is why he's willing to hire a former NFL head coach who almost took over the Washington Redskins after Joe Gibbs' sudden retirement. As for Williams, the job makes sense, too. He was guaranteed $2 million for next season, so he might as well find some work and make Redskins owner Daniel Snyder pay the difference. But more important, he likes what he sees in the Jaguars -- this is most definitely not a rebuilding job, but a fine tuning one. Besides, a great year or two with the Jaguars and another head coaching job will be out there for him.Williams will have much more autonomy to call defensive plays, more so than Smith did. While Smith was liked by the players, he wasn't necessarily all that respected. In fact, several current and former Jaguars wondered aloud how Smith got the Atlanta head coaching job. That won't be the case with Williams. He will be universally respected, if not liked. He has a beefy resume and a reputation as one of the best defensive coordinators in the league. Williams helped the Tennessee Titans reach the Super Bowl after the 1998 season; was the head coach at Buffalo for three years; and for the past four seasons, he had just about complete control running the Redskins' defense. While under Smith (and also, Del Rio), the Jaguars played a much more conservative defensive scheme; that'll change under Williams. Known as one of the most aggressive play-callers in the NFL, Williams will dial up blitz upon blitz and put opposing offensive 4 Brett Favre White jersey
lines as well as quarterbacks under extreme duress. That's a big deal for Jacksonville. The Jaguars feel they're pretty close to dethroning the as the top dog of the AFC South. And beating the Colts will require putting Peyton Manning on his back with increasing frequency. So Del Rio went after, and got, Williams. It's a win-win proposition. Especially because somebody else is paying for part of the bill ... what's not to like?

Dwight Freeney Bill Polian Bruce Smith Buffalo Bills

Despite struggling for much of the last four seasons, the constant of the ' defense has always been defensive end Dwight Freeney. Led by the former first-round pick, the unit finally rose out of the depths of the National Football League in 2005, finishing second in points allowed and 11th in yards surrendered en Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
route to a 13-3 season. The former Syracuse star was criticized by scouts and analysts upon entering the league for being too small, but the 6-1, 268-pounder has done more than enough to prove his detractors wrong. More importantly, though, he's proven the Colts' sensational president, Bill Polian, right.During his four-year career, the freakishly athletic pass rusher hasn't finished a season under the 11-sack plateau, when he did so in '03 and '05. While that number is Freeney's career-worst, plenty of pro defensive ends dream of tallying that many quarterback takedowns in a season. Freeney has done it despite having to deal with double and triple-teams on a regular basis. In 2002 and 2004, Freeney amassed a combined total of 29 sacks, with 13 coming in '02 (his rookie season). The wunderkind also set a record for first-year defenders, forcing a whopping nine fumbles. In '04, the Hartford, CT native compiled a league-leading 16 sacks and four more forced fumbles, becoming arguably the most feared end in the game. With the Colts' candle of high expectations continuing to burn brightly entering the upcoming season, so too should Freeney's. It may as well be a foregone conclusion that the 26-year-old will eclipse the double-digit sack line, as long as he maintains full health. That's never been a problem in his career, so don't expect it to become one now. In fact, Freeney has missed just one regular season game out of a possible 64 - not bad for a defensive lineman, right? The fact that 2006 is his contract season should motivate Freeney more. Even the most marginal of professional athletes have breakout years when their contracts are about to expire. Expectedly, the stars truly come out to shine during their contract seasons. Freeney's shined to the tune of 51 sacks and 23 forced fumbles in his career, and could reach the coveted 15-sack mark this season for the second time in his career. For fans, the possibility of yet another huge campaign from Freeney is 4 Brett Favre White jersey
excellent to ponder, but it will come at a heavy cost for the team's front office. However, don't think Polian won't try to lock up his prodigious young rusher. From the executive's days with all-time sack leader Bruce Smith and the Buffalo Bills in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he knows the importance of having a feared, game-changing presence on the defensive line.--Connor J. Slow Finish Tony Dungy Family Tragedy

You've seen the questions in articles all throughout the offseason and even now as the 2006 NFL campaign draws near. Are the on the decline after their poor finish on the field in 2005? Have they peaked? Is their window closing on that elusive Super Bowl win?Maybe those writers are onto something. Every decade since Nixon has had one or two hard-luck teams that get to the playoffs regularly but never wins the big one -- in the '70s it was the Minnesota Vikings, in the '80s the Denver Broncos and in the '90s, the Buffalo Bills. While the Colts 10 Santonio Holmes black jersey
could be the next in line for that dubious honor, I think it's too early to say. I know, the offense slowed a bit last year, they let Edgerrin James sign with Arizona, and 34-year-old Marvin Harrison's reception total went down for the third season in a row. But don't forget they won 13 straight games in '05 and scored a gagillion points the year before. Here's what I think happened last season. The Colts were on autopilot, coasting through their schedule like Walter Payton through a Detroit defense when, on Dec. 23, shocking news hit them like a tidal wave -- Tony Dungy's son James died suddenly at the age of 18. The young man who had most certainly been like a little brother to many of the Colts' players was gone -- tragically and suddenly taken from their world for seemingly no reason, his death heaping a heavy dose of reality on the team.I have not lost a child in my life and won't pretend to know what that feels like. But I have lost a parent -- as I'm sure many people reading this article have -- and I know that a death in the family like that makes you stop and think about life on a much bigger and profound scale than the way you perceived it the day before. The details of your job seem much less important, you find it hard to concentrate, and you appreciate the people who are still around you for just being there -- even those you maybe didn't like so much before your personal loss.I imagine that to a lesser or greater extent, Dungy's personal loss made each member of the stop and think about their mortality, their individual families, maybe their own deceased loved ones. And perhaps at that point, the 2005 season, the 13-game winning streak or the road to the Super Bowl didn't seem that important for a few days and maybe weeks last winter. The offensive output from last season bears that out. In their first 14 games the Colts scored an average of 30.1 points. In their final four games (including their playoff loss to the Steelers) -- 16.2.True, other factors could, and probably did, affect the team's on-field results down the stretch, but likely none of them more than the death of the head coach's son.If you're a fan of the team, a fantasy geek or a Las Vegas gambler, give the Colts a mulligan for last January's debacle. Their final four games should have an asterisk next to them. They still have great young talent on both sides of the ball, including a 6-foot-5, 230-pound quarterback in his prime with a laser, rocket arm (sorry, Sprint). This team is fine. And there is no 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
reason to believe 2006 won't be just as successful for the Colts as the last few years have been. Reserve your playoff tickets, draft Manning and Harrison, and go with "the over" every week. Now that the team's 2005 personal loss is fading into memory, it's back to the business of winning football games for the . (2)
