Dennis Dixon Named Pittsburgh Steelers QB: No Guarantee for Ben Roethlisberger

The NFL suspended Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in April for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Roethlisberger last week and reduced the suspension to four games. Roethlisberger will be eligible to return to play on Oct. 17 against the Cleveland Browns.
Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student but was never charged. He is the first NFL player to be suspended that was not arrested, charged with, or convicted of a crime.
Goodell stated that the policy allows him to suspend players when the league’s integrity and reputation are at stake.
The Steelers thought that Byron Leftwich would be their starting QB at the start of the season, but that changed when he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left leg in a preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
On Monday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced Indianapolis Colts jersey
that Dennis Dixon would be the Steelers' starting quarterback. Dixon, a third-year player who played college football for Oregon, briefly saw NFL duty last season. Dixon started against the Baltimore Ravens, throwing for one touchdown and running for another. The Ravens defeated the Steelers in overtime, 20-17.
Tomlin had this to say about his new starting quarterback: “Dennis had a very productive preseason and training camp. He went into the training camp as a young guy, second in the pecking order behind Byron Leftwich. He did a nice job and made it extremely competitive. He waged a battle and got some first-team reps in some preseason games. Largely, we’ve been very impressed with how he’s handled himself in game situations.”
Tomlin was asked if Roethlisberger would retain his starting position when he returned to the team. He answered, “I’m going to dodge that one and not artfully. I’m not going to back myself into a corner.”
